Anatomy

Anatomy (from the Greek word anatome, "dissection"), is a branch of natural science dealing with the structural organization of living things. It is an old science, having its beginnings in prehistoric times. For centuries anatomical knowledge consisted largely of observations of dissected plants and animals. The proper understanding of structure, however, implies knowledge of function in the living organism.

Department of Periodontology

About the Department

The Department of Periodontics provides periodontal education to undergraduate dental students, in MINDS which is under Pondicherry University. The Periodontal education is provided through didactic courses and preclinical laboratories.

The goal of the periodontal education is to educate dental students to be competent in recognizing and diagnosing periodontal diseases and providing periodontal therapy to their patients. In the Department of Periodontics, this competency is measured through their performance on didactic examinations and through clinical performance assessments on various types of periodontal procedures the students perform in the clinic.

The dental students perform periodontal examinations, treatment plans, periodontal debridement, re-evaluation of initial periodontal therapy, and periodontal maintenance and decision making on preferred treatment plans. The students gain familiarity with various types of periodontal surgical procedures while assisting during periodontal surgery performed by the faculty and preceptorship student in periodontics. After gaining some experience in witnessing and assisting during periodontal surgery, the dental students may be able to perform some periodontal surgical procedures depending on the type and complexity of the surgery.

Undergraduate education of implants is a major focus of our newly restructured department. MINDS present an integrated implant curriculum that emphasizes implants as a routine restoration in clinical dentistry. Soon the department will start a certificate course on dental implants and lasers in dentistry

Facilities provided in the department are a prompt diagnosis of the ailment which includes case history, examination and diagnosis. A special emphasis on the chief complaint of the patient without neglecting the other problems. A proper treatment protocol is followed which starts with phase I therapy that includes scaling and root planning. Perio-esthetic procedures such as gingival depigmentation, frenectomy, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, crown lengthening, vestibuloplasty and various mucogingival surgeries are performed.

Major surgical procedures for problems like periodontal pockets are also done; such techniques include various flap surgeries. Specialized surgical therapies like free gingival graft, lateral pedicle graft, etc are also performed. Regenerative surgeries such as various bone grafts and guided tissue regeneration are also done successfully in the department. We motivate the patient for maintenance of good oral hygiene by explaining various tooth brushing techniques. Implant therapy and finally Laser treatment.

Department of Prosthodontics

About the Department

Prosthodontics is that branch of dentistry which deals with the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of the patient by the restoration of the missing natural teeth. It also deals with the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes. This discipline includes Fixed, Removable, Maxillofacial and Implant Prosthodontics

Prosthodontists specialize in this field of dentistry. Prosthodontist is a dentist who, following four years of dental school has successfully completed three additional years of rigorous specialized training in a recognized post-doctoral program in Prosthodontics.

The area in which the Prosthodontist specializes are
Removable Prosthodontics
It is that branch of Prosthodontics concerned with the replacement of teeth and contiguous structures for patients who have few or no teeth at all, with the help of artificial substitutes that are removable from the mouth. Such prostheses include complete and partial removable dentures.
Fixed Prosthodontics
It is that branch of Prosthodontics concerned with the restoration and/or replacement of teeth by artificial substitutes, which are not removable from the mouth. Such restorations include crowns, fixed partial dentures (bridges), esthetic veneers, and restoring surgically placed implants.
Implant Prosthodontics
It is that branch that deals with dental implants. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into your jaw to hold a replacement crown or bridge in place. The treatment can be more conservative than the traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support
Maxillofacial Prosthodontics
Maxillofacial prosthodontics is concerned with the prosthodontic management of patients who present with congenital or acquired problems in the maxillofacial region. Their role involves the fabrication of specialized prostheses such as maxillary obturators which are specialized removable dentures which plug defects in the upper jaw which are caused by the removal of tumors or are present from birth due to cleft palate. They are also involved in the replacement of missing teeth and facial structures such as eyes, ears and noses.

Maxillofacial prosthodontists will often use osseointegrated implants in order to retain parts of the appliance. Treatment is multidisciplinary, involving oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, ear, nose and throat surgeons, oncologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists Prosthodontists have the advanced knowledge necessary to help provide treatment for birth defects such as cleft palate, conditions such as traumatic injury, and complex restorations for patients who have undergone surgical or radiation treatment for cancer

The main aim of Prosthodontics is to improve the dentally crippled patient with artificial substitutes to improve their appearance and their masticatory efficiency. A good, well made denture reduces loss of bone, maintains good health and prevents future health problems in advanced age groups. Implantology is a recently developed branch of restoring missing single or multiple teeth with highly predictable rates of success.

Department Profile

The Department of Prosthodontics has teaching programme of 895 hours in the BDS curriculum. As per the Department in MINDS is well staffed, and well equipped to meet this huge responsibility.

Spread over 7,500 sq ft, the department is equipped with more than 34 dental chairs, and a special implant clinic with all the facilities. It has a very well designed dental lab with all the latest, state of the art equipment to provide best services to the patients. The lab is well staffed with talented technicians, and they are all under control of Professor to maintain the quality of work.
